Environmental Effects Monitoring

Our aquatic scientists bring over 20 years of experience designing, implementing, and reporting for EEM, including more than 200 studies at over 45 mining and pulp and paper facilities.

Minnow Environmental, a Trinity Consultants Team, offer over 20 years of experience designing, implementing, and reporting for EEM, including more than 200 studies at over 45 mining and pulp and paper facilities. We are recognized as experts in the delivery of Environmental Effects Monitoring (EEM) studies as required under the Canadian Fisheries Act for several types of industrial discharges.

Our scientists have been involved in EEM since its initial development in the early 1990s and have completed hundreds of EEMs for the pulp and paper industry (per Canada’s Pulp and Paper Effluent Regulations promulgated in 1992) and for the mining industry (per Canada’s Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations promulgated in 2002).

Recently our team joined with Ecofish Research, a Trinity Consultants Team, to bring enhanced value to our clients. Ecofish offers excellence in regulatory strategy, environmental flow needs, remote data collection, baseline studies, wildlife surveys, management plan development, construction monitoring, and environmental compliance related to biological and physical sciences.

How We Can Help

From the hundreds of EEM projects our team has completed, we have gained an exceptional understanding of the nuances of EEM and the associated regulations, and therefore fully understand the variety of approaches that can be applied in meeting site-specific EEM needs. We also have particular expertise and experience in application of EEM across multiple facilities located in the same area (i.e., multi-facility EEMs) and for effectively integrating EEM into broader environmental monitoring programs, both of which result in cost optimization. Our comprehensive services include:

  • EEM study design and implementation: From initial study design through to execution and reporting, we ensure compliance with all regulatory phases.
  • Investigation of cause: When effects are identified, our team tailors site-specific investigations to evaluate what is driving the cause of differences and how they might be related to effluent or natural influences.
  • Site-specific solutions: We offer site-tailored strategies that address the unique environmental conditions and regulatory needs of your operation.
  • Regulatory reporting support: We support every component of EEM-related reporting, including study design submissions, communications with regulators, providing change notifications, and submitting biological data and interpretive reports, ensuring that all required data and documentation is submitted accurately and on time.

Our scientists have presented numerous technical papers on EEM, including three technical presentations at the EEM Investigation of Cause (IOC) workshop attended by government agencies, industry, and consultant groups.
